AMMAN, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- A heavy snowfall hit Jordan on Wednesday, blocking roads and causing traffic jam in parts of the country.

In the capital Amman, the municipal authorities were using snow plough trucks to clear roads, as the temperature in the kingdom, according to Jordan Meteorological Department, was brought below freezing.

On Wednesday night, the Prime Minister's Office announced a day off on Thursday for the public schools and universities because of the current weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the Greater Amman Municipality and the Civil Defense Department urged residents to remain in their houses as the snowfall was expected to continue until Thursday morning.

A polar front is affecting the region, bringing heavy snow to countries including Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Turkey.
