BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's procuratorates initiated more than 28,000 public interest litigation cases on food and drugs in 2018, according to a national meeting of chief procurators Thursday.

Over 12,000 people were indicted for crimes related to such cases last year, up 5.5 percent from the previous year.

A total of 44,537 people were indicted for telecom, internet or financial fraud crimes, a 28.1-percent rise year on year, while the 5,271 indicted for infringement on citizens' personal information last year marked a 20.2-percent increase compared to 2017.

Procuratorate authorities also made sure that the punishment on crimes and the protection of human rights went hand in hand, according to the meeting. The arrests of more than 290,000 and the indictments of over 140,000 people were disapproved by procuratorates in 2018, up 10.8 percent and 22.3 percent year on year, respectively.
