ALGIERS, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Algerian Ministry of Interior on Friday said it is set to organize on Saturday and Sunday a forum dedicated to the issue of illegal immigration under the theme "The future of our youth, a shared responsibility."

This meeting will be an opportunity for different parties to discuss, analyze and provide solutions and recommendations to implement a comprehensive plan of action for addressing this phenomenon in all its aspects, noted the source in a statement quoted by APS news agency.

Four main workshops will be organized during this forum, which would tackle some key subjects meant to curb the phenomenon of illegal immigration.

Algeria faces two categories of illegal migrants. The first consists of local people trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea in rickety boats, often risking their lives to reach the Italian or Spanish coasts. The second category is represented by sub-Saharan migrants across the North African nation in the hope of reaching Europe, as they settle in Algeria illegally.

In 2018, the country's authorities launched a wide-scale raising awareness campaign through media and mosques to convince young people to avoid risking their lives while trying to reach Europe.

As for sub-Saharan migrants, negotiations are often conducted with their countries of origin ahead of repatriating them in the best possible conditions.

A few months ago, Spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, Ravina Shamdasani, called Algeria "to stop massive expulsions of migrants," especially from sub-Saharan Africa, warning that this expulsion campaign would lead to a rise in racism and xenophobia against sub-Saharan Africans.
