TEHRAN, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Ministry announced on Saturday that the country will support the "legal" government of Venezuela in the face of U.S. "illegal meddling", state TV reported.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran supports Venezuela's legal government as well as its nation in the face of Washington's illegal interference," Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi said.
On Jan. 12, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo described Venezuela's government under President Nicolas Maduro as "illegitimate," saying the United States would work with like-minded countries in Latin America to restore democracy there.
Any foreign intervention in Venezuela's domestic affairs would be "unconstructive" and would merely further complicate the situation in the country, Qasemi was quoted as saying.
Tehran believes the solution to Caracas's domestic problems is a dialogue among the country's political officials within legal frameworks, he added.
