ARUSHA, Tanzania, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in collaboration with UN Women will carry out a program aimed at ending all forms of discrimination against women, a senior official said on Thursday.

Albina Chuwa, NBS Director General, made the remarks soon after a meeting with officials from the UN Women in the country's capital Dodoma.

"The program is aimed at addressing the urgent need to increase the availability of accurate information on gender equality and women's rights," said Chuwa.

Chuwa noted that the program, "Making Every Woman and Girl Count," is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, which aims at ending all forms of discrimination against women and girls.

The official added that Tanzania is one of a few African countries which will benefit from the three-year UN Women program worth 864,939 U.S. dollars.

Izeduwa Derex-Briggs, UN Women's Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa, said that Tanzania is one of the 12 pathfinder countries chosen by UN Women to implement the program.

She said the program aims to bring about a radical shift in how gender statistics are used, created and promoted, saying the program will build a supportive policy and institutional environment to monitor gender data.

Hodan Addou, Tanzania's representative for UN Women, said UN Women came up with the idea after realizing that getting data on women and girls is a challenge, saying the program will improve access to data to inform policy.

"The program will provide technical and financial support to countries to improve the production and use of gender statistics," she said.
