WINDHOEK, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources on Monday said that it is safe again to consume abalone from the Luderitz Aquaculture Production Area.
The ministry's public relations officer De Wet Siluka told Xinhua Monday the most recent test results conducted on abalone samples collected from Luderitz Production Area produced negative results of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning in abalone.
The test was facilitated by the Namibia Standard Institute and was guided by the National Shellfish Sanitation Program following an announcement of a potential threat on Jan. 11, a statement from the ministry said.
The abalone samples were collected and submitted for testing for Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning, the ministry said and two consecutive re-tests produced negative results which confirmed that abalone may therefore be harvested for direct human consumption.
Meanwhile Siluka said that no cases of human poisoning were recorded during the period, due to the ministry's fast reaction.
Furthermore he added that the results from the oysters and mussels produced at Walvis Bay also indicated that there were no abnormalities in the products.
