NAIROBI, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Kenya is set to host the 2019 Global Learning Council (GLC) Summit in October that will explore how countries can effectively use digital technology to improve learning outcomes, an official announced on Thursday.

Amina Mohamed, cabinet secretary of Ministry of Education, said the meeting will bring together leaders from global academia, industry and non-profit sectors to explore the best way to take advantage of modern technologies to improve teaching and learning.

Sajitha Bashir, education sector manager for Eastern and Southern Africa region of the World Bank, said application of digital technology in education is a necessity that will improve learning outcomes that are denied to many children.

"Some 12 million children in Africa enter the labor market with little or no skills for employment, which was not good for Africa's development as the continent requires a critical mass of scientists and engineers to resolve the technology required for mass skilling of the citizens," Bashir said.

Bitange Ndemo, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, said the delivery of education ought to take advantage of digital technologies to ensure that governments give the best education to learners.

"Change is taking place and yet we have not begun to talk about how best we can leverage on the changing digital technology to deliver the impending Kenyan school education curriculum," Ndemo noted.
