ACCRA, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Ghana's Minister for Youth and Sports Isaac Kwame Asiamah on Monday applauded Richard Commey for defeating Isa Chaniev to emerge as the new IBF lightweight champion over the weekend.
Commey dropped Isa Chaniev twice and stopped him in the second round to win the vacant IBF lightweight title.
Asiamah said Commey's unrelenting ambition en route to becoming a world champion makes him more deserving of his title.
He is convinced that by this feat Commey can go even further and cement his status as the best around and most importantly, just like his predecessors, be an inspiration to other budding talents and potential world champions in the country.
Commey, who becomes Ghana's ninth world champion, is set to face Vasyl Lomachenko on April 12 to unify the WBA, WBO and IBF 135-pound belts.
The winner would then be one title away from being considered the undisputed lightweight champion.
