SYDNEY, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Around 1,000 new surveillance cameras will be installed at businesses across Sydney's outer suburbs, New South Wales (NSW) Premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Tuesday, with a program underway to fund their installation.
"More surveillance cameras will increase community confidence and send a strong message to would-be criminals that if you do the wrong thing, you will be caught and punished," Berejiklian said.
Businesses and organizations can apply for up to 3,500 U.S. dollars to install the cameras but police decide where they are placed and will have full access to the footage.
"Police are the best ones to monitor security, to make sure they match evidence in criminal proceedings but also to monitor community activity," Berejiklian said.
The premier said that the cameras will work to deter would-be criminals and would not infringe on the rights of those abiding by the law.
"Surveillance is part-and-parcel of modern day life. If you're doing the right thing, you have nothing to fear," she said.
