NEW DELHI, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Indian police Wednesday arrested a rightwing woman leader, Pooja Pandey, and her husband Ashok Pandey from northern state of Uttar Pradesh, for recreating the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary, officials said.

The duo were arrested from Aligarh and produced at a local court.

"A case was lodged against nine people, including Pooja Pandey and her husband and ABHM national spokesperson Ashok Pandey," a police official said.

Pooja, on Jan. 30 and in presence of a handful of supporters, shot at an effigy of Gandhi and later one of the supporters burned the effigy.

The video recording of the incident was widely circulated on social media, sparking an outrage.
