TRIPOLI, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based army on Wednesday announced taking over Sharara oil field, the largest one in the country.

The army's information department announced that "the army forces have entered Sharara oil field and started securing it."

The department published images of military vehicles inside and around the oil field.

Sharara is located some 900 km south of the capital Tripoli. It has capacity to produce over 300,000 barrels of crude oil daily.

The oil field has been shut down repeatedly due to armed attacks and protests, causing loss of millions of U.S. dollars.

The army, led by General Khalifa Haftar, has been launching a military campaign against terrorism and crime in the south since mid-January.

The army is allied with the eastern-based government, as the country is politically divided between two governments in the east and the west, both competing for legitimacy.
