U.S. dollar rises on positive economic outlook

NEW YORK, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar rose on Thursday as upbeat data pointed to positive economic outlook.

In the week ending Feb. 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 234,000, a decrease of 19,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 253,000, the Department of Labor reported on Thursday.

The four-week moving average was 224,750, an increase of 4,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 220,250, said the department.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, increased 0.10 percent at 96.4997 in late trading.

In late New York trading, the euro decreased to 1.1351 dollars from 1.1363 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound increased to 1.2959 dollars from 1.2937 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar was down to 0.7100 dollar from 0.7113 dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 109.83 Japanese yen, lower than 109.98 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar was down to 1.0017 Swiss francs from 1.0025 Swiss francs, and it rose to 1.3301 Canadian dollars from 1.3203 Canadian dollars. Enditem
