TRIPOLI, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Libyan eastern-based army on Friday launched airstrikes on Chadian opposition militants in the southern town of Murzuk, some 900 km south of Tripoli.

"The Libyan Arab Air Force fighter jets targeted three gatherings of the Chadian gangs and their allies in the south near the town of Murzuk," the army's information department said.

"The strikes were fierce and painful for the groups that corrupted our land. Our jets returned to their bases safely," the statement added.

On Sunday, the army announced the launch of similar airstrikes on Chadian opposition groups in Murzuk, causing the militants great losses of lives and equipment.

The Libyan army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has been carrying out a military campaign against terrorism and crime in the south since mid-January.

The army recently announced a significant progress in the region, and its takeover of the largest oil field in Libya.

The army is allied with the eastern-based government, as the North African country is politically divided between two governments in the east and the west, both competing for legitimacy.
