MADRID, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Antonio Garcia Aranda 'Tono' who plays for Spanish Liga Santander club, Levante, has been arrested and placed in preventive custody in prison in the city of Teruel (northeast Spain) on charges which include extortion and threatening behavior, his club have confirmed.

Tono was detained along with another six people and legal sources indicate he could face other charges such as forming part of a criminal organization, issuing death threats, using forged documents and money laundering.

The player's lawyer Emilio Perez insisted on Spanish radio that the arrest was "an error and an injustice," while the club, who are currently in mid-table in the Liga Santander, issued a communique to "show our support for the player and his family, as well do know fully know the circumstances which have led the judge to adopt the measures."

The 29-year-old left back has started 17 league games for Levante this season, but will now almost certainly miss Monday's trip to play Alaves unless there is a dramatic change in his situation.
