NEW DELHI, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Priyanka Gandhi, the sister of the Indian National Congress' (INC) President Rahul Gandhi, carried out a road show in northern state Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow on Monday, attracting huge crowds.

This was Priyanka's first public appearance after being appointed as INC's general secretary in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh ahead of the forthcoming parliamentary elections, slated to take place sometime in April-May.

Priyanka's 15-km long road-show started from the Lucknow airport and concluded at the party's office in the city.

She was accompanied by her brother Rahul, besides other senior INC leaders.

Though Priyanka campaigned in the past elections for her brother Rahul and mother Sonia Gandhi, both of whom are sitting parliamentarians, this is the first time she has jumped into active politics.

Her induction into INC fold is seen as a big boost for the main opposition party. Her presence in Uttar Pradesh, which has the maximum number of 80 parliamentary constituencies out of the total 543, is expected to improve the prospects of her party in terms of constituencies won.

In last parliamentary polls held in 2014, the INC won just 44 parliamentary constituencies across the country, the lowest tally in its political history.
