CAIRO, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian army killed seven terrorists on Saturday in a shootout during a terror attack on a checkpoint in North Sinai province in the northeastern of the capital Cairo, the country's military spokesman said in a statement.

"As a result of the fire exchange, an officer and 14 soldiers of different ranks were either wounded or killed," military spokesman Tamer al-Refai said.

He added that the forces are currently searching the area in pursuit of other terrorists.

Egypt has been facing terrorist activities that killed hundreds of policemen, soldiers and civilians, following the military ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 in response to mass protests against his one-year rule and his currently banned Muslim Brotherhood.

Most of the terror attacks in Egypt in the past few years were claimed by a Sinai-based group loyal to the Islamic State regional terrorist group.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian army and police killed hundreds of terrorists and arrested thousands of suspects during the country's ongoing anti-terror war declared by President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi.
