LAGOS, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's police has ordered sustained patrols and surveillance across Lagos, the nation's economic hub to maintain law and order, following the postponement of elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The patrol was to ensure safety of the citizen of the state, Lagos police chief Zubairu Muazu told reporters in Lagos.

He called on residents to go about their lawful duties without any fear.

The police chief warned hoodlums and persons with criminal intent that the police will not entertain any act capable of breaching the peace of the state.

The electoral body shifted Saturday's presidential and national assembly elections to Feb. 23 after a meeting, which began Friday evening, ending early on Saturday.

INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu attributed the postponement to logistic and operational challenges.

He said the postponement would afford the commission the opportunity to address the identified challenges in order to maintain the quality of Nigeria's elections.
