"Alita: Battle Angel" tops North American box office in opening weekend

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Fox's cyberpunk action film "Alita: Battle Angel" took top spot at North American box office with an estimated 27.8 million U.S. dollars in its debut weekend.

The sci-fi epic, which cost over a reported 170 million dollars to produce, has earned 36.51 million dollars since it opened on Thursday, according to studio figures collected by measurement firm Comscore.

Based on Japanese manga series "Gunnm", the film is directed by Robert Rodriquez and produced by James Cameron. American actress Rosa Salazar stars as Alita, a cyborg, who wakes up in a doctor's clinic with no memory of who she is. She must soon use her extraordinary fighting abilities to combat deadly forces while trying to uncover the truth behind her mysterious past.

Receiving mixed reviews, the film enjoyed an "A-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences, but only received a 59 percent certified fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Warner Bros.' animated adventure comedy film "Lego Movie 2: The Second Part" moved to the second place with an estimated 21.21 million dollars in its second weekend, pushing its North American total to 62.69 million through Sunday.

Directed by Mike Mitchell, the film is a direct sequel to 2014's "The Lego Movie." "Lego Movie 2: The Second Part" reunites the heroes of Bricksburg in an all new action-packed adventure to save their beloved city. The battle to defeat invaders and restore harmony to the LEGO universe will take Emmet, Lucy, Batman and their friends to faraway, unexplored worlds.

Warner Bros.' romantic comedy "Isn't It Romantic" opened last Wednesday and took in an estimated 14.21 million dollars this weekend in third place for a North American total of 20.45 million dollars through Sunday.

Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson and stars Rebel Wilson among others, the plot follows New York City architect Natalie who, after getting hit on the head, wakes up in a world where everything around her plays out like a romantic comedy film.

Paramount's romantic fantasy comedy film "What Men Want" landed in fourth with an estimated 10.92 million dollars in its second weekend.

The film is a loose remake of the 2000's film "What Women Want." Directed by Adam Shankman and starring Taraji P. Henson and Aldis Hodge among others, the film follows a female sports agent who gains the ability to hear men's thoughts after drinking a mysterious concoction given by a shaman.

Universal's sci-fi comedy slasher film "Happy Death Day 2U" finished fifth in its opening weekend with an estimated 9.81 million dollars. The film is a sequel to 2017's "Happy Death Day" and directed by Christopher Landon.
