Afghan president meets with visiting U.S. CENTCOM commander

KABUL, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- The commander of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Gen. Joseph Votel paid a visit to Afghan capital Kabul and held meeting with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday, the Presidential Palace said on Wednesday.

"Matters pertaining mutual interests including the Afghan peace process, the war on terror, and funding and equipping Afghan security and defense forces were discussed in the meeting," the palace said in a statement.

The outgoing senior U.S. commander, according to the statement, told the president that his mission has come to an end, but assured his successor would be someone who would have better knowledge about Afghanistan and would remain a strategic partner of the Afghanistan government and its armed forces and the Afghan people.

President Ghani also stated in the meeting that the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces have become more capable as compared to the past in fighting against militant groups, according to the statement.
