Backgrounder: Major fires worldwide since Jan. 1

DHAKA, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- A devastating fire that ripped through a number of buildings on Wednesday night in old part of Bangladesh capital Dhaka has killed at least 81 people, mostly women and children, and injured scores of others.

The following are some major fires around the globe since Jan. 1:

-- NEW DELHI, Feb. 12, 2019: A massive fire that broke out inside a four-storey hotel in Delhi's Karol Bagh area claimed as many as 17 lives, including one child and three women.

-- RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 8, 2019: At least 10 players were killed and three others injured when a fire swept through a training center at Flamengo football club in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The center operated by football club Flamengo housed a total of 26 players. Only half of them were able to escape the pre-dawn blaze, which spread rapidly through the facility's air-conditioning system, according to one of the young residents.

-- PARIS, Feb. 5, 2019: At least 10 residents died and 36 people were injured in the Paris building ravaged by a huge fire. The fire broke out after midnight on the upper floors of an eight-storey building in Paris' swanky 16th district, which is home to foreign embassies and renowned museums.

-- MOSCOW, Jan. 21, 2019: At least 11 people were killed after two ships caught fire in the Kerch Strait connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

According to preliminary information, an explosion occurred on one of the vessels and set it on fire, which spread to the other ship later on.

-- QUITO, Jan. 12, 2019: Eighteen people were killed and 12 others injured in a fire at a rehabilitation clinic in the Ecuadorian port city of Guayaquil.
