TRIPOLI, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Libya's interior ministry on Thursday condemned the assassination of Ibrahim Mohamed Krai, security chief of the southern city of Murzuk, by an unknown armed group.

"The Interior Ministry of the Government of National Accord condemns in the strongest term the crime of assassination of the security chief of Murzuk Ibrahim Mohamed Krai by an outlawed armed group in the city," the ministry said in a statement.

"The Ministry denounces this cowardly criminal act that targets police and security personnel, as well as the security agencies in the country," the ministry said, adding it would spare no effort in perusing the armed group.

Murzuk is located some 900 km south of the capital Tripoli, the region where the eastern-based army has been leading a military campaign against crime and terrorism.

According to local media, Krai was assassinated on Wednesday night by an unidentified armed group inside his home.
