UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Equatorial Guinea, which holds the Security Council presidency for the month of February, on Wednesday asked the council to adopt a resolution on the financing of peacekeeping operations led by the African Union.

The resolution drafted by Equatorial Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire and Ethiopia -- the three present and past African members of the Security Council, failed to be put to vote in December 2018 as a result of a lack of support from the United States, which has veto power.

"The (draft) resolution on the financing of peacekeeping operations in Africa, pending adoption by the Security Council is crucial. The desire to silence the guns in Africa would be a utopia unless it is accompanied by this important step," Simeon Oyono Esono Angue, foreign minister of Equatorial Guinea, told the Security Council in a debate on silencing the guns in Africa.

"Therefore, I should like to take this opportunity to call upon this council to achieve unity ... so that we can sooner rather than later celebrate and adopt this other important aspect of our objective to complete the equation."

The adoption of the draft resolution would give Africa "a solid point of departure" to begin to build the Africa of tomorrow, which is free of conflicts and guns and where its people would only have to worry about how to face day-to-day challenges in a climate of peace and stability, said the foreign minister.
