BUDAPEST, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban presented an ambitious 6-point economic program, defining Hungary's future for the period up to 2030, according to official sources here on Thursday.
The PM unveiled the program during a speech at the "Business Year Opening Event" hosted by the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, according to the Hungarian government's official website.
The six points include: Hungary becoming one of the EU's five best countries; Hungary becoming one of the EU's five most competitive states; a halt to the country's demographic decline; the physical and economic rebuilding of the Carpathian Basin; turning the whole of Central Europe into a genuine economic region; and the attainment of energy independence.
For the latter, Orban noted that there was a need for development of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant and an increase in solar energy.
The Hungarian head of government highlighted the importance of the spiritual foundations of Christian Democracy, saying "this does not refer to faith-related issues, but rather to the protection of ways of life and concepts that arise from Christian culture."
Orban also underlined the necessity to keep the country's budget deficit below 3 percent of GDP and to reduce the country's sovereign debt. "Better to be a creditor than a debtor," he said.
To tackle the country's demographic decline, the prime minister said plans must be based on a workforce of 5 million workers.
Orban concluded by saying that areas traditionally comfortable for Hungarians, such as agriculture and the food industry, sport and culture could also be developed into successful sectors.
