AMMAN, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Iran on Tuesday released three Jordanians who were detained a few months ago after mistakenly entering the Iranian waters from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Iranian authorities released the three Jordanians and handed them to the Jordanian diplomats at the embassy in Tehran and preparations started for them to return, said Jordan's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Sufian Qudah in a statement.

The Iranian authorities took a decision two weeks ago to release the three Jordanians after imposing a fine on them for illegally entering the Iranian waters. The three Jordanians were on a fishing trip in the UAE waters.

The Jordanian official said the embassy paid the fine, voicing appreciation for the Iranian government for releasing them.

The official added that the ministry took all necessary measures to ensure their release as soon as possible.

The three were detained in December 2018.
