SYDNEY, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Senior Vatican figure Cardinal George Pell has been sentenced to six years imprisonment in Melbourne on Wednesday, for the sexual abuse of two children dating back to 1996 when he was the Archbishop of Melbourne.
Found guilty of the crimes in December last year, Wednesday's sentencing was broadcast live from the courtroom.
"I would characterize these breaches and abuses as grave," Judge Peter Kidd told the courtroom.
"You continued to offend with callous indifference to the victim's distress."
"There is no evidence of your remorse or contrition for me to act upon to reduce your sentence."
Previously serving as the Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy of the Vatican between 2014 to 2019, Pell was considered the third-highest figure in the Catholic Church.
Aged 77, Pell will be eligible for parole in three years and eight months.
