TIRANA, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Albanian police arrested 14 citizens for the violent acts targeting police officers and institutions during the opposition protest held in capital Tirana on Saturday, police said in a statement on Sunday.

The authorities also filed criminal proceedings for Secretary of the Democratic Party Gazmend Bardhi, who was in charge of the protest organization.

The arrested people will face charges of "organization and participation in illegal gatherings and manifestations, violence against police officers, disruption of public order and use of explosives," says the statement.

Thousands of protestors, led by main opposition Democratic Party, held an anti-government protest in Tirana on Saturday, triggering turmoil.

The opposition supporters protested against the Socialist government, which they accused of corruption and linking to organized crime, asking for Prime Minster Edi Rama and his cabinet to step down.
