PHNOM PENH, March 26 (Xinhua) -- A Cambodian court on Tuesday sentenced real estate tycoon Thong Sarath and his four bodyguards to life imprisonment over the murder of fellow tycoon Ing Meng Chue in 2014.
Phnom Penh Municipal Court's Presiding Judge Top Chhunheng pronounced the verdict before the four bodyguards, as Sarath was not taken from the prison to hear his verdict.
Sarath was found guilty of initiating premeditated murder, as his bodyguards were guilty of committing premeditated murder, according to the verdict.
The disgraced tycoon was arrested in April 2015, and during a raid on one of his villas in Phnom Penh, police found eight illegal guns.
Ing Meng Chue was shot dead on Nov. 22, 2014 after he parked his car and walked towards a fruit store in Phnom Penh.
During a trial earlier this month, Sarath's defense lawyer Tout Lux said Sarath denied all the accusations, claiming that he had no conflict with the victim.
Under the kingdom's law, the convicts have a month to appeal against the guilty verdict.
