RIO DE JANEIRO, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Former Brazil U-20 and Flamengo boss Ney Franco has been appointed head coach of Chapeceonse, the Brazilian Serie A club said on Thursday.

The 52-year-old replaces Claudinei Oliveira who was sacked on March 17 amid a poor run of results.

Franco, who will be tied to Chapecoense until December, has been out of work since surprisingly leaving Goias last December, having overseen the club's promotion to the top flight.

He is Chapecoense's eighth manager since a 2016 plane crash killed 19 of the club's players and all of the coaching staff, including then-boss Caio Junior.

Chapecoense are currently third in Brazil's Santa Catarina state championship with three rounds remaining.

They will begin their 2019 Brazilian Serie A campaign with a home match against Internacional on April 27.
