JOHANNESBURG, April 1 (Xinhua) -- The Malawians who were forcefully removed from their homes last week had returned to their homes in Durban's Burnwood informal settlement, said Mayor of eThekwini municipality Zandile Gumede on Monday.

Last week about 300 Malawians were attacked at night and forced to seek shelter at police station and mosque. Gumede intervened and held some meetings with the community, asking them to allow the Malawians to return to their homes.

"We have managed to return the situation to normality. A large group of Malawian nationals have opted to return to Burnwood informal settlement. We have about 105 Malawians who have requested to be repatriated."

"We are doing everything possible to assist them together with the International Organization for Immigration and the Malawi High Commission," said Gumede.

She stated that locals expressed willingness to accept the Malawians back into their community. The government hoped to conclude repatriation and reintegration processes by Wednesday.

Acting Malawian High Commissioner to South Africa Gloria Bamusi said that they support all the processes that are currently taking place.
