8 dead, 30 wounded in road accident northern Morocco

RABAT, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Eight people were killed and 30 others were injured in a road accident that took place Wednesday in the northern town of Moulay Bousselham.

According to the local authorities of Kenitra province, the accident occurred when truck and a van carrying farm workers collided.

The same source noted that the injured people were transported to local hospitals to receive the necessary care.

An investigation was underway.

Following the accident, the Moroccan King Mohammed VI expressed his deep condolences and sincere compassion to the families of the victims, wishing prompt recovery to the injured.

A total of 3,435 people were killed in road accidents in Morocco between November 2017 and October 2018, 3.16 percent decrease compared year on year, according to the latest statistics by the Moroccan Ministry of Transport.

In 2016, the Moroccan government adopted a national road safety strategy aiming at reducing the fatalities in road accidents by 25 percent in 2021 and 50 percent by 2026.
