UNITED NATIONS, April 8 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called for restraint in Sudan amid mass demonstrations, said his spokesman.

"The secretary-general is following closely the demonstrations in Sudan. He appeals to all actors to exercise utmost restraint and avoid violence," Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman, said in a statement.

The UN chief called for full respect for human rights, including the freedom of assembly, the freedom of expression, and the release of detained protestors. He further called on the Sudanese government to create a conducive environment for a solution to the current situation and to promote an inclusive dialogue, according to the statement.

Guterres affirmed that the United Nations stands ready to support any efforts agreed by the Sudanese to peacefully resolve the current crisis, said the statement.

Six people have been killed since mass protests began to emerge in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum over the weekend.
