NAIROBI, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan police have intensified search for two Cuban doctors who were kidnapped by suspected al-Shabab militants in Mandera town in northeast Kenya near the Somali border on Friday morning.

Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured the Cuban government and the international community that Kenya is doing everything within its capability to rescue Assel Herera Correa and Landy Rodriguez, according to a statement issued in Nairobi.

"All security apparatus have been activated and are tracking down the abductors to ensure the safe return of the two doctors," the ministry said in the statement.

The two medics were heading to Mandera County Referral Hospital which is their work station before the ambush at around 9 a.m. local time.

The attackers shot dead one of the two police officers who were guarding the medics during the attack.

The ministry called on the global concerted effort in combating transnational crimes and eliminating elements disruptive to peaceful existence.

The two medics are among 100 Cuban specialists who arrived in the country in June 2018 under a bilateral arrangement between Kenya and Cuban governments.
