BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- A series of Forbidden City-themed children's books titled "Monsters in the Forbidden City" has sold over three million copies.

The book series, created by children literature writer Chang Yi, celebrated the success of its sales in Beijing on Saturday. Three books of the series' fourth volume were also unveiled.

The series centers upon the adventures of the fictional character Li Xiaoyu, a primary school student who stumbles upon a mystic earring in the Forbidden City and acquires the ability to communicate with the mythical beasts that dwell in the royal palace.

The book series has been translated and exported to more than 10 countries and regions including Russia, the Republic of Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.

In terms of adaptation, apart from the currently touring musical, an animated TV series and film adaptations are also on the way.

The book series is a successful example of promoting traditional Chinese culture in a way that attracts children, commented Liu Guohui, head of the Encyclopedia of China Publishing House.
