MAPUTO, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The main opposition party in Mozambique, Renamo, announced on Tuesday that it had submitted to the presidential office a list of ten officers to be placed to the positions of General Command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM).
The delivery of the list represents another step in the process of integrating the former rebel movement's residual members into the defense and security forces.
"We inform the entire Mozambican people, the diplomatic corps accredited in Mozambique and the contact group that we have already submitted to the Office of the President of the Republic the list of ten Renamo officials," said Renamo's leader Ossufo Momade in a teleconference for Maputo from Gorongosa, central Sofala province.
Momade added that "the act represents our unequivocal desire to continue with the dialogue, and above all, our desire to see the return to the normal life of our people, and it is therefore up to the government to take in these general officers as fast as possible."
The list was delivered under the agreements made in August 2018 between the government and Renamo, which provides for the reintegration of Renamo's top officers in the senior positions of PRM, the Mozambique Defence Armed Forces (FADM), and the State Information and Security Services.
Fourteen Renamo general officers have been integrated in the positions of command of the FADM within the scope of these agreements.
At the last meeting held in late February in Maputo, both the Renamo leader and the president of the republic reaffirmed their commitment to the understandings reached for effective peace.
With the present step of the Renamo party, it is expected that relations with the government will be better and the peace process more efficient.
