MOSCOW, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Russian company Zvezda plans to start developing a new modular spacesuit this year, its CEO and chief designer Sergei Pozdnyakov said Wednesday.

According to the TASS news agency, Pozdnyakov said the development of the new spacesuit, including the testing of it, will take several years.

The spacesuit is expected to be used both for spacewalks from the International Space Station (ISS) and for landing on the Moon with certain modifications added.

Russian astronauts on the ISS currently go into outer space in Orlan-MKS spacesuits, which are not intended for use on planetary surfaces.

Established in 1952, Zvezda is a leading Russian company in design, development and production of portable life support systems for aircraft and spacecraft crews, aircraft emergency escape and survival means for passengers and crews.
