DUBAI, April 20 (Xinhua) -- A total of 34,067 blood units were collected by the Abu Dhabi Blood Bank from 28,621 donors in 2018, compared with 32,009 units in 2017, official Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported Saturday.
Apheresis platelets also saw an increase to 2,799 from 433 donors in 2018, compared with 2,675 in 2017, WAM said.
Male donors constituted 86 percent of the total units, it added.
Blood transfusion is essential in diseases such as heart surgery, organ transplants and treatment of leukaemia and cancer.
The report said on average, the blood bank collects more than 25,000 units of blood every year and more than 1,000 units of apheresis platelets.
