TOKYO, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The Japanese government confirmed on Monday that one Japanese national was killed and four wounded in the Sri Lankan bomb attacks on Sunday that left 290 people dead and over 500 injured.

The Japanese killed in the bombs was a woman called Kaori Takahashi who is a local resident, the government said.

She was eating at a restaurant with her family when they were caught in one of the eight blasts rocking the capital city of Colombo and other parts of Sri Lanka.

The Japanese government said that four others sustained non-life threatening injuries.

More than 30 foreigners including those from the United States, Britain, Belgium, India and China were among the killed.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and conveyed "sincere solidarity" to the Sri Lankan people.

"Such acts of terrorism cannot be justified and Japan firmly condemns them. Japan is firmly committed to combatting terrorism in cooperation with Sri Lanka and the international community," Abe said in a message to Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena.

The Japanese government said it has dispatched a special unit to Sri Lanka to gather information on the Japanese victims and the attackers.

Sunday's blasts were the worst acts of violence since the country's 30-year civil war between government troops and the Tamil Tiger rebels ended in 2009.

At least eight blasts, mostly in or around the capital city of Colombo, were reported during the day, with six blasts striking in the morning and two in the afternoon.
