TUNIS, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia said on Tuesday that the country has officially joined the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

"The AIIB approved the accession of Tunisia on April 22," the Ministry of Development, Investment and International Cooperation said in a statement.

According to the statement, the total approved membership of the AIIB has increased to 97.

During his visit to China in February, the Tunisian ministry chief Zied Ladhari formally requested the membership of the financial institution for his country.

"This would allow Tunisia to receive funding for many development projects, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, transport, renewable energy and water resources," the ministry statement noted.

Starting operations in January 2016, the AIIB is a multilateral development bank which aims to improve socio-economic conditions in the Asia-Pacific region.
