Large haul of narcotic drugs seized in Myanmar's northernmost state

YANGON, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar authorities seized a large amount of narcotic drugs in townships of northern Kachin state, according to the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Wednesday.

The seizure was made on Monday by the township police force in Shwegu and Hpakant townships, respectively.

A total of 77,000 stimulant tablets worth 231 million kyats (154,000 U.S. dollars) were confiscated in a basket loaded on a motorbike when a woman riding the motorbike was intercepted on Moesit-Latesin Kyauk Chaw road in Shwegu township on Monday morning.

Also, 70 stimulant tablets worth 210,000 kyats (140 U.S. dollars) and 6.8 grams of heroin worth over 549,000 kyats (366 U.S. dollars) were seized from a bag carried by a man in Hpakant township.

The two suspects were charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
