Chinese shares end higher Wednesday

BEIJING, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ending at 3,201.61 points, up 0.09 percent.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.1 percent higher at 10,236.27 points.

Combined turnover of stocks in the two indices stood at 652.3 billion yuan (about 97.36 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 324.9 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers by 953 to 455 at the Shanghai bourse and 1,575 to 512 in Shenzhen.

Shares of hydrogen energy producers were among the biggest gainers. Henan Yuneng Holdings Co. saw its share price rise by the daily limit 10 percent to 5.25 yuan a share.

Automakers also demonstrated strong performances, led by Yangzhou Yaxing Motor Coach Co. which gained by the daily limit 10 percent to end at 13.04 yuan per share.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, went up 2.08 percent to close at 1,718.85 points Wednesday.
