TOKYO, April 24 (Xinhua) -- More than 2.68 million pieces of personal data from over 100 Japanese entities were breached in 2018, a survey conducted by Kyodo News survey revealed Wednesday.
The leakages have been confirmed and made public by 104 organizations or companies including hotels and universities.
Tokyo-based MS&Consulting Co. underwent the biggest breach involving 570,000 pieces of personal information such as email addresses, passwords and phone numbers.
Data leakages from French hotel reservation service Fastbooking SAS has exposed information of people who had made reservations at Japanese hotels.
In June 2018, a hacker stole around 320,000 pieces of customer data from Fastbooking's Japanese clients including names, addresses, nationalities and dates of stay.
Hirosaki University in northeastern Japan, Yokohama City University and other 12 national, public and private universities suffered from cyber-attacks, in which cases their emails were hacked and exposed.
Moreover, shopping mall operator Mitsubishi Estate-Simon Co. in Tokyo and Oshino Village Sightseeing Association in Japan's Yamanashi Prefecture, found their information was stolen and posted on overseas online bulletin boards and websites.
In 2019, at least two more massive leaks have taken place.
In January, OGIS-RI Co., a large-capacity file transferring service company, said 4.8 million pieces of personal information may have been exposed, while in March 3.1 million pieces of customer data from Toyota Motor Corp.'s marketing units were leaked.
