ISTANBUL, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Turkish police have detained a suspected militant of the Islamic State (IS) in northwestern Turkey who was allegedly planning to attack a World War I commemoration, local media reported on Wednesday.

Anti-terror teams launched an operation in the Tekirdag province the previous day to catch the suspect, a Syrian national, over a tip-off that he was planning a terror attack, the private Demiroren news agency said.

The target was reportedly the memorial services slated for Wednesday and Thursday in the neighboring Canakkale province to commemorate Australian and New Zealand veterans who lost their lives during the Battle of Canakkale in 1915, Demiroren said.
