DOHA, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Sunday met with the visiting president of the Italian Senate Maria Elisabetta Casellati over the Gulf crisis and the means to boost bilateral cooperation, official Qatar News Agency reported.

During the meeting, Sheikh Tamim and Casellati highlighted the friendly ties binding Qatar and Italy and reviewed a host of regional and international issues of mutual interest.

They also discussed the repercussions of the ongoing Gulf crisis on the security in the Middle East region.

Casellati voiced Italy's support for settling the crisis via political dialogue and diplomatic means, urging an end to the regional blockade imposed on Qatar.

Since mid-2017, an embargo against Qatar has been imposed by an Arab quartet of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, which accuses Qatar of supporting terrorism, a charge Doha has repeatedly denied.

Casellati's visit to Qatar comes fewer than a month after a visit by Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte to Doha, where he discussed with Sheikh Tamim the means to cement bilateral ties in the fields of defense, economy and investment as well as developments in Libya.
