BEIRUT, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon and Brazil signed on Thursday a protocol agreement for cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries, the National News Agency reported.

The protocol agreement aims at renewing and strengthening relations between the two parliaments based on the equality principle and mutual benefits in addition to exchanging information between the two countries when it comes to parliamentary activities.

House Speaker Nabih Berri emphasized the importance of the agreement in creating common points of views for the two parliaments in the international forums while boosting economic, cultural and social ties.

"The friendship between the two countries is historic due to the presence of a big number of Lebanese citizens in Brazil since a very long time ago," Berri said.

Meanwhile, Head of the Brazilian Parliament Rodrigo Maia said the new agreement will strengthen the historic ties between the two countries.

Maia arrived in Beirut on Wednesday evening for a one-day visit to meet with Berri and sign cooperation agreements.
