NAIROBI, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Commuters will now be able to book the Madaraka Express train 60 days in advance after Kenya Railways (KR) announced changes on Friday to better customer experience.
In a notice to the public, the corporation said it had extended the booking period from 30 to 60 days for the train that runs on the standard gauge railway.
"Passengers will now select their preferred seats online. In addition to Mpesa, passengers will also be able to pay their fares using debit and credit cards," added the KR.
The changes take effect on June 1, said the corporation. The passengers will also be able to cancel their tickets online and seek refund.
"Request for refund shall be accepted 48 and 72 hours to date of travel for individuals and groups respectively," said KR, adding refunds shall be subject to 30 percent fee of ticket price.
Similarly, passengers will be able to reschedule their travel 48 to 72 hours before time of journey.
The train service that plies the Nairobi-Mombasa route is popular with Kenyans and foreign tourists, with travellers booking it weeks in advance.
The train, which is run by the Chinese, ferried 1.7 million passengers between Mombasa and Nairobi in 2018, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics data show.
