KIEV, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Armed groups have unilaterally broken the ceasefire in Ukraine's eastern region of Donbas, the press service of the Joint Forces Operation, the Ukrainian government's military operation, said on Wednesday.

As a result, the government's work on restoring the buildings damaged by previous shellings in Donbas has been suspended, the press service said via its Facebook account.

Since April 2014, an armed conflict between government troops and pro-independence armed groups has been underway in Donbas.

Previously, the conflicting sides have declared more than 30 rounds of truce, easing the hostilities to some extent. The latest ceasefire in the region came into force on March 8.

The Ukrainian government and the regional armed groups reached the Minsk agreements in September 2014 and renewed the truce deal in February 2015. Designed to peacefully end the conflict, the agreements envisage a ceasefire, a withdrawal of heavy weaponry from the contact line, a prisoner exchange and local elections, among other measures.
