Fijian police warn about street attack crimes

SUVA, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Fijian police are warning people including tourists to be vigilant especially in towns and cities as there are criminals going around attacking people for money and any valuables.

Fiji's Commissioner of Police Sitiveni Qiliho has made an urgent call for people to be security conscious while moving around cities and towns and to report any suspicious cases of opportunists.

According to Fijivillage website on Thursday, Qiliho made the call following the resurfacing of cases where people in Fiji are being mugged, attacked and robbed in the capital city of Suva, especially at night with the latest case being of a man, returning from work, was brutally assaulted at the Suva Foreshore.

Qiliho said opportunists are loitering around, looking at areas where they can exploit to their advantage, and he calls on the public to avoid loitering in isolated areas.

He said they are also encouraging business owners to put up surveillance cameras to help curb crimes.

Qiliho said discussions were going on between police, the Suva City Council and the Suva Retailers Association on putting up CCTV cameras around the capital city.
