JOHANNESBURG, May 10 (Xinhua) -- With over 91 percent of the votes having been counted by Friday afternoon, the African National Congress (ANC) is leading the race with 57.56 percent of the votes.

The opposition party Democratic Alliance (DA) is in second position with 20.81 percent of votes and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is in third position with 10.42 percent.

Counting has already been completed in the Western Cape with DA winning it by 55.58 percent. North West results have also been announced with the ANC reclaiming it by 61.8 percent and ANC retained Mpumalanga with 70.58 percent.

While the ANC is leading, its support has declined in most provinces, with the EFF showing much growth in all provinces.

Counting is likely to be completed on Friday evening and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is expected to release official results on Saturday.

However, 35 small opposition parties have said that the IEC should not release the results until independent auditors verify if the elections were free and fair. The parties have claimed that a number of irregularities took place during Wednesday's voting as some voters voted twice.

Earlier, IEC commissioner Mosotho Moepa said that there was no evidence that some voters double-voted as it was alleged.

"We have heard this allegation, but there's no evidence. Anyone who makes an allegation has got a duty to present evidence that will support the allegation. Not a single person has come forward to say that I have voted twice," Moepa said.
