BRATISLAVA, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Third time is not a charm for Italy. The elite category newcomers lost also their third Group B match 3-0 to Latvia, and remain bottom on the tally with no goals scored and 20 conceded at the Ice Hockey World Championship in Slovakia.
Italy's latest loss came on Tuesday. They were close to scoring their first championship goal late in the first, but it was waved off after a coach's challenge due to an offside revealed by the review.
Italy's best player was without any doubt their goaltender Andreas Bernard, who stopped 62 attempts by the Latvians. Only Roberts Bukarts' backhander and Rihars Marenis' top shelf attempt made it past Bernard. Teodors Blugers' goal landed in an empty net after Italy pulled their goalie at the end.
Italy will have a tough time improving on their 0-3 record facing Russia on Wednesday and fifth-placed Latvia will battle for the fourth position or better in Group B on Thursday against the Czechs.
