5.5-magnitude quake strikes off Japan's southern Amami-Oshima Island: JMA

TOKYO, May 15 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 struck off the north-east coast of Japan's southern Amami-Oshima Island, the weather agency here said Wednesday.

No tsunami warning or advisory has been issued as a result of the offshore quake, it said,

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the temblor struck at 2:34 local time, at a latitude of 29.7 degrees north and longitude of 130.7 degrees east. The quake occurred at a depth of 30 km, the JMA said.

The quake registered 3 on Japan's seismic scale which peaks at 7, the weather agency said, and was felt in areas in Kagoshima Prefecture.

There have been no immediate reports of injury as a result of the temblor, according to local authorities.
